Undergraduate Global Immersion Programme

Being able to work effectively with foreigners and foreign organisations has become a very important contributor to career success in the internationalised economy. The Undergraduate Global Immersion Programme (UG-GIP) is designed to support B&A students in developing their potential in the internationalised environment. UG-GIP aims to instill in students a deeper understanding of a foreign culture and its society and environment, and expose students to a broader overview and understanding of international business.

UG-GIP comprises four non-credit bearing courses: GIP 100BEF (Year 1), GIP 200BEF (Year 2), GIP 300BEF (Year 3)*, and GIP 400BEF (Year 4). These courses are designed to enhance students' intercultural awareness and communication skills and help students to develop a global mindset.

*GIP 300BEF includes a study tour. Students are responsible for incidental expenses such as airfare and accommodation.

Career and Further Studies

Career Prospects

Graduates can develop their career in different tourism and hospitality sectors in Hong Kong and beyond. They can choose to serve either profit or non-profit organisations in the capacity of, for example, professional ecotourism resort hotel managers, ecotourism holiday planners or tourism environmental education officers.

Further Studies

Opportunities are available for the graduates of this programme to pursue postgraduate studies in Hong Kong and abroad. Students may continue to study for a master's degree in tourism-related areas such as MICE, hotel, tourism marketing or real estate management; or other master's degrees in business-related areas.

Students' Sharing

I was privileged to have been selected for the Business School's Overseas Internship Programme, which provided me with the opportunity to serve as a Front Office Intern at JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai for a period of six months. One of the memorable experiences during my internship was when heavy rainfall caused flooding and infrastructure breakdown in the city. Despite the challenging situation, my colleagues and I were tasked with maintaining order in the hotel and assuring guests of their safety. My supervisor’s unwavering commitment was truly remarkable, as she remained on duty until every Front Office staff had successfully completed their duties. Her sense of responsibility towards us and her work was truly inspiring, and it has instilled in me a desire to become a responsible leader in the future.

Zhang Yixiao Andy

My internship at Four Seasons Tokyo at Otemachi, Japan, in the Food and Beverage Department has been a transformative experience that has provided me with invaluable insights into the culinary world. Through my work, I have gained a deep appreciation for the importance of teamwork and collaboration in delivering exceptional dining experiences, as well as the significance of delivering high standards of service in a luxury hotel setting. This experience has instilled in me a passion for delivering exceptional service, which I believe will be a valuable asset in my future career growth in the hospitality industry. I am grateful for the opportunities and lessons I have gained in this overseas internship programme, which have broadened my perspective in the hospitality industry and equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in this field.

Lam Sin Ying Jaime

Tourism student

My internship with the Dorsett Hospitality International Group provided me with several memorable experiences, including visits to D20R Park in Sai Kung, a Chinese medicine research farmland, and the construction site of Dorsett Kai Tak in Kowloon. During these visits, I not only observed sustainability practices from a hotel perspective but also witnessed how property development can contribute to the community. Through this internship, it inspired me to work as a Sustainability Consultant and Environmental Analyst. In this role, I aim to guide businesses towards adopting eco-friendly practices. I will shape policies and strategies that minimize their environmental impact.

Hung Wai Tung Trista

Through the Global Immersion Programme, I had the opportunity to explore and engage with a different culture. It not only enhanced my skills in my chosen field but also provided me with a dynamic and fulfilling learning experience. I'm grateful to HKMU for broadening my horizons and capabilities beyond the confines of Hong Kong.

Chau Hoi Ki Bobo

Tourism student

During my internship as a receptionist at Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong, I gained a variety of valuable skills and experiences that would undoubtedly benefit my future career.

As a receptionist intern, my primary responsibility was to ensure a pleasant and seamless experience for all guests from check-in to check-out. Yet the essence of excellent customer service is not just about greeting guests with a smile, but to understand their needs and provide personalized recommendations to enhance their stay. I have learnt how to listen carefully to guests' requests, anticipate their needs, and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

In addition, the frequent face-to-face interactions with guests and written correspondence have greatly improved my communication skills. It is important to communicate in a clear and concise manner, and to tailor your approach to different individuals and situations. Beyond the soft skills, I also gained the practical knowledge of hotel operations, from using hotel management software, to handling cash and credit card transactions, and managing reservations and room assignments.

All in all, this was an incredible experience that allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to applying all the skills I acquired in my future endeavors.
