SCI 8003SEF is a course designed by the School of Science and Technology for the Postgraduate programme.

Aims

This course is designed for students studying Medical Laboratory Science and provides insights and understanding of the theoretical and practical elements of haematology and transfusion science. Students will learn about haematology and how to use haematological tools for research and diagnostics in both haematology and transfusion science in this course.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  1. Haematopoiesis
  2. Haemolytic diseases and autoimmune haemolytic anemia
    • Routine Haematology Testing — CBC parameters (WBC, RBC, HGB, HCT, RBC Indices, PLT)
    • Erythrocytes
    • Leukocytes
    • Platelets
  3. Haematological malignancies
    • Myeloid Neoplasms
    • Lymphoid Neoplasms
  4. Clotting factor, haemostasis and bleeding disorders
  5. Blood transfusion

Assessment

Course assessment includes continuous assessment and two final examinations. Continuous assessment includes a mid-term test and laboratory reports. A three-hour final written examination and a three-hour final practical examination will be conducted at the end of the course.

There is no textbook for the course. Major references will be used instead. The instructor will provide lecture notes and other necessary learning materials.
