Aims

This course aims to explore the nature of human existence, and to articulate a deepened understanding of human life in all its richness and contradictions. Students would be inspired to examine the meaning and moral significance of life, as well as the implications of being conscious of one's own mortality. The course will foster students' skills and sensitivity in applying these philosophical approaches to reflect on and to analyse concrete day-to-day problems arising from questions about the human condition, human values, and what it means to live.

Contents

  1. Philosophical, psychological, cultural and spiritual analysis of life and death
  2. The meaning of human life and human existence in both Western and Chinese philosophical traditions
  3. Existential relevance of philosophy of life and death to everyday life:
    • Encountering and evaluating death
    • Ethical deliberation of life and death
    • Morality and rationality of suicide
    • Euthanasia
