Aims

PSYC A229 Biological Psychology: Theories and Principles aims to help students develop a critical understanding of the major concepts and theories of biological psychology, as well as the research methods and methodologies used in biological psychology and neuroscience. The course covers the application of biological psychology in explaining human behaviours and mental processes, as well as discusses the current developments and debates in the field of biological psychology. Upon completion of the course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the major concepts and theories of biological psychology, and will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to critically evaluate research in the field.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • The fundamental concepts and understandings of the human nervous system and the internal chemistry of the human body.
  • The underlying biological mechanisms, major theoretical perspectives, and current issues of certain psychological processes, including sensation and perception, sleep, emotion, learning and memory, cognitive functions, and psychological disorders.
  • Research methodologies in biological psychology and neuroscience.

Learning support

There will be ten two-hour tutorials and three day schools.

Assessment

There are five assignments and a final examination.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
