Aims

The course aims to familiarise students with fundamental research concepts and methods in translation and language studies. Students will explore and acquire related techniques and methodologies to conduct research. Towards the end of the course, students will be able to design a small-scale research, employ appropriate research methods and identify translation/language patterns through critical analyses.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  1. Key concepts in translation research
  2. Components of a research essay
  3. Research questions/hypotheses
  4. Literature review and theoretical framework
  5. Research design and methodology
  6. Data analysis and discussion
  7. Academic writing skills and referencing
  8. Academic presentation skills

Learning support

Through in-class discussions and activities, students will review and revise their research questions, review published research, develop a theoretical framework, and engage in data collection and analysis. When applicable, consultations will be arranged in the hope that students can refine their research. The concepts, research methods, and possible topics, as well as published research articles selected for teaching will depend on the expertise of the teacher.

Students are encouraged to use the Online Learning Environment (OLE) to access the course and supplementary materials and study them before and after each lesson. The online Discussion Board will be an alternative means for students to communicate with the teacher and with their peers.

Assessment

  1. Class participation (10%)
  2. Assignment 1: research proposal (30%)
  3. Assignment 2: research essay (40%)
  4. Presentation (20%)

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
