Aims

ENGL 2210EED English for Effective Communication II: Listening and Speaking aims to:

  • enhance learners' understanding of academic and vocational applications of English; and
  • develop learners' listening and speaking skills for study and work purposes.

Contents

ENGL 2210EED English for Effective Communication II: Listening and Speaking is a one-term, 2000-level English proficiency course designed for students taking the English language studies programmes offered by the School of Education and Languages. The course covers five modules. The first three modules focus on listening and speaking skills that would enable students to succeed in their university studies. These skills include active listening and notetaking, formulating and presenting sound arguments as well as delivering effective academic presentations. The remaining two modules cover workplace communication, where students are expected to build on what they have learnt in the previous modules and apply the skills to the workplace.

Learning support

This distance learning course will be delivered through 14 hours of face-to-face tutorials, with supplementary printed materials provided.

Assessment

This course has two assignments, each constituting 20% of the overall course grade. For Assignment 1, students will watch selected videos and then present their opinions and arguments relating to the topic. Assignment 2 involves an academic presentation. The final examination accounts for 60% of the overall course grade. It includes a listening examination (20%) and two speaking tasks (40%). The three examination tasks will last approximately two hours and thirty minutes.
