To enroll on this course, students must meet the entry requirements of the following programmes:

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)
  • Bachelor of Language Studies (English) (Honours) and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)

Aims

This course aims to:

  • enhance learners' understanding of current developments in English language teaching;
  • consolidate learners' knowledge of the applied linguistic theories which inform language teaching and learning processes;
  • help learners develop their ability to reflect on and, where necessary, modify their existing pedagogical practices; and
  • develop learners' capability to teach effectively within the context of the secondary English curriculum in Hong Kong.

Contents

This course consists of ten study units which cover the following topics:

  • The English language curriculum: An overview
  • Reflective teaching and action research
  • Second language acquisition
  • Instructed second language acquisition and the four strands
  • Learning and teaching grammar
  • Learning and teaching vocabulary
  • Learning and teaching language skills I: Reading and writing
  • Learning and teaching language skills II: Listening and speaking
  • English language assessment
  • Curriculum evaluation, change and innovation

Learning support

Student support for this course will include in-person contact and online support. In-person learning support consists of 12 two-hour tutorials designed to complement the course materials and assist students in consolidating their learning for each unit. In terms of online support, students can access course materials and the latest course information through the Online Learning Environment (OLE) and use the discussion board to communicate with their tutors, the Course Coordinator and fellow students.

Assessment

Students are required to complete four written assignments for continuous assessment purposes, accounting for 60% of the overall grade. Additionally, there will be a three-hour final examination at the end of the course, which will contribute to 40% of the overall grade.

Electronic submission of assignments

Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

There is no set textbook for the course. Students taking this course are provided with a course guide, assignment files and study units for independent learning.
