Regulations for the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences and Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours
These regulations are made under paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees.

In these regulations definitions shall apply as in the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees and in the Interpretation Section of the Academic Rules and Regulations.

Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSSC)
1. To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences, a student shall:
  a) comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  b) comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  c) obtain at least 120 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and
  d) obtain at least 80 credits in courses prescribed by the regulations as appropriate to the degree for which notice has been given, including at least 20 credits in courses at Higher level.
2. For the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  a) successfully complete 20 credits from course(s) labelled FD in Table 1, i.e.
    20 credits from SOSC A101/SOSC A101W; and
    OR
    20 credits from both SOSC A111C/SOSC A111CW and SOSC A112C; and
    OR
    20 credits from SOSC A121C and SOSC A122C and SOSC A112C; and
  b) obtain at least 60 credits from Social Science courses (labelled OD in Table 1), of which at least 20 credits must be gained at Higher level; and
  c) successfully complete 40 credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, provided that, of the total 120 credits*, no more than 40 credits are gained at Foundation level.
    * Of the 120 credits required for the attainment of the degree, students can complete up to 40 credits of courses in a language of instruction other than English.
       
Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours (BSSCH)
1. To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours, a student shall:
  a) comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  b) comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  c) obtain at least 160 credits, of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and
  d) obtain at least 40 credits in courses at Higher level; and
  e) successfully complete the prescribed programme of studies.
2.

For the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours, the University has prescribed that a student must:

  a) successfully complete 40 credits of compulsory courses labelled HC in Table 1, i.e.
    (i) 20 credtis from SOSC A101/SOSC A101W; and
      OR
      20 credits both SOSC A111C/SOSC A111CW and SOSC A112C; and
      OR
      20 credits from SOSC A121C and SOSC A122C and SOSC A112C; and
    (ii) 20 credits from SOSC A303 or SOSC A313 or SOSC A313C
  b) successfully complete 40 credits from courses labelled ME in Table 1; and
  c) successfully complete 40 credits from courses labelled HE in Table 1; and
  d) successfully complete 40 credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, provided that, of the total 160 credits *, no more than 40 credits are gained at Foundation level.
    * Of the 160 credits required for the attainment of the degree, students can complete up to 50 credits of courses in a language of instruction other than English.
3. Each degree with Honours shall be conferred with a classification of First Class, Second Class (Upper Division), Second Class (Lower Division) or Third Class save that exceptionally a degree may be conferred without classification.
4. Subject to the requirements of the relevant programme of study, each person on whom an Honours degree is to be conferred shall be assigned to a classification determined by the University according to its regulations.
5. For the calculation of scores for classification purposes in the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours, the University has deemed that “Group (a)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in courses at Higher level listed in Table 1, and that “Group (b)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in courses at Higher or Middle level listed in Table 1, where such credits are not taken into account in “Group (a)” . Further, that “X” shall equal one, that is “Group (a)” and “Group (b)” shall be equally weighted. (Refer to the paragraphs on Classification of the Degree with Honours of the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees.)

  3. If students have successfully completed ECON A230, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements for ECON A231 and ECON A232.
     
  4. If students have successfully completed PSYC A317, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements for PSYC A307.
     
  5. SOCI A315 will be replaced by SOCI A301. Students who have successfully completed SOCI A315 will be deemed to have satisfied the requirements of SOCI A301.
     
  6. If students have successfully completed MATH S242, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements for STAT S242.
     
  7. If students have successfully completed SOSC A111C, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements for SOSC A121C and SOSC A122C.
