Aims

The course aims to introduce contemporary theories and research methods of media and cultural studies for the study of creative economy and cultural policy and practices. Case studies and empirical evidence will demonstrate how cultural practices link to concepts and theories of creativity, human capital, globalization and localization, which contribute to the growth of the creative economy. Various cultural policy models and their impacts on specific sectors of the creative industries will be compared and contrasted in terms of the goals and roles of different government agencies, non-governmental organizations and private foundations. The course will enhance students' research and analytical abilities for problem-solving in creative arts production and management in relation to the policy and global contexts.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Historical and global development of the creative and cultural industries
  • Theories and research methods for the study of creative and cultural industries
  • The management and organization of creativity
  • Creative economies, creative cities and creative class
  • Models and issues of cultural policy
  • Identities and communities of cultural production and creative consumption
  • Regional studies of creative industries

Assessment
Assessment is based on students' performance in the continuous assessment components including a class presentation (worth 30% of the total mark for the course), a term project (worth 30% of the total mark for the course) and a research paper and oral presentation (worth 40% of the total mark for the course). Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
