Aims
This course aims to introduce students to concepts and theories in World Englishes and ELF (English as a Lingua Franca). Using popular media and literary texts as examples, this course will explore language features of native, second and foreign varieties of English around the world as well as the social and cultural issues arising from the global spread of the English language.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Basic concepts of World Englishes and English as a lingua franca
  • Variation in native Englishes
  • The 'New' Englishes
  • English in global contexts
  • The future of English as a global language

Assessment
There are three assessment components: Assignment 1 Test (20%), Assignment 2 Essay (40%), and a final examination (40%). Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
