Aims
In combination with LANG A881F English Language Systems 1, this course aims to familiarize students with the key English language systems and to prepare them for further studies in areas in applied linguistics. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the key language systems in English, define and discuss basic linguistic terms, and apply the concepts and theories learned to studies in applied linguistics.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Phonetics and phonology
    • Sounds in English
    • Stress
    • Connected speech
    • Intonation
  • Semantics
    • Key concepts in semantics
    • Meaning relations between words
    • Meaning relations between sentences
  • Pragmatics
    • Key concepts in pragmatics
    • Politeness theory
    • Speech acts
    • Indirectness

Contact hours
Normally three hours per week.

Assessment
The continuous assessment portion of the course accounts for 60% of the total course score, while the final examination accounts for the remaining 40% of the total course score. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
