Sizable projects help focus our research efforts

Dear Colleagues,

In May, the Education Bureau awarded HKMU HK$23.1 million via its Quality Education Fund (QEF) to further enhance the Open English textbook series, which we developed in 2016 and is currently in use. Our QEF project, titled “Revitalizing Open English Materials Through Multimedia Components and Creation of a Mobile Application to Support LTI: Facilitating Blended Learning and Self-Directed Learning for Primary 1 to Secondary 6”, aims to transform Open English into an immersive online and multimedia platform.

The project will introduce new features, such as videos, animations, mini games, AI and Read Aloud, AR, VR and AI Chatbot, to provide a more engaging and effective English language learning experience.

Good things come in pairs. Our School of Nursing and Health Studies received HK$20.3 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for a project titled “Jockey Club 'BaMa Chill Club' Perinatal Support Project”. In collaboration with The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Young Women's Christian Association, the project provides a comprehensive mental health programme, which includes screening, education and awareness, hotline counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, prenatal couples' workshops, group activities for parents, parents-in-law and domestic helpers, postnatal follow-up, and monitoring through family-based stepped-care intervention. The programme aims to support parents across the spectrum of needs and enhance their mental well-being.

Not only do these projects attract substantial funding, but they involve a large number of faculty members in various disciplines from several schools. These collaborative, multidisciplinary projects are also socially relevant and impactful, and are expected to make a significant contribution to Hong Kong and beyond.

As we integrate and consolidate our research activities, we will face the inevitable challenges of the lack of personnel and space, but these are problems shared by all aspiring institutions. Through the prudent use of our financial resources and our concerted efforts, I am confident that we will overcome these obstacles and reap the benefits of our hard work in the coming years.
