Cultivating students as

Global Citizens

To develop students' global mindset and strengthen their sense of identity as global citizens, the Student Affairs Office launched the nine-month MU Global Citizenship Programme 2024 in the last academic year. The programme included a series of thematic activities designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) identified by the United Nations. Additionally, a cross-cultural enrichment tour to Sri Lanka was organised to foster in-depth cultural exchanges and enrich students' learning experiences.

Various talks and training workshops were held between January and June 2024 to enlighten students on the SDGs, focusing especially on the issues of refugees, climate action and fair trade.

Following that was an eight-day tour to Sri Lanka in July 2024. Students interacted with local families, visited community infrastructure and an organic farm, and designed engaging cultural exchange games for the local students. Over 120 local students from kindergartens, primary schools, and village schools were served by the student team.

Students' reflections

Social Sciences

This cross-country community service trip truly widened my horizons! Before the trip, I was concerned about the environment, temperature, and security in Sri Lanka. However, upon arrival, I realised the locals were very nice and we were often greeted by passers-by. What impressed me the most was playing games with children in village schools. Their enthusiasm was truly inspiring.

Although the trip to Sri Lanka lasted only eight days, the experiences were unforgettable. I still remember the starry sky, the symphony created by crickets and tree frogs, and the friendliness of the locals. I was also happy to have the opportunity to visit local families and provide services to village schools — experiences unique to this trip. I gained a lot from the cultural exchanges with them.

Psychology

The programme offered me the opportunity to experience the culture of Sri Lanka and learn about the challenges faced by local people. It taught me not to take things for granted as someone living in a prosperous city. I also learnt from the locals how to coexist with nature and embrace the spirit of “living in the moment”.
