On 12 July, the University held a reception to celebrate the accreditation of its Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physiotherapy programme received this June, and invited Mr Tony Au Tat-kwong (third left), member of the Physiotherapists Board of the Supplementary Medical Professions Council (SMPC), to officiate the event.

Practising as registered physiotherapists

The four-year programme was launched in 2020 in response to the growing demand for physiotherapy services in society, and HKMU is the first self-financing university in Hong Kong to offer a degree programme in this discipline. The programme produced its first cohort of graduates this summer while receiving professional accreditation from the Physiotherapists Board of the SMPC in June. The fresh graduates are now qualified to practise as registered physiotherapists in Hong Kong and can apply for full membership in the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association. Among them, over 80% are already employed, with most joining the Hospital Authority and the rest NGOs and private organisations.

Emphasis on both teaching and practice

Committed to imparting professional knowledge, the University has continuously enhanced its teaching facilities since the launch of the programme, including setting up five state-of-the-art physiotherapy laboratories in the Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare. Additionally, the University established the Physiotherapy Centre in 2022, providing facilities for physiotherapy clinical training as well as physiotherapy services to members of the University and the community. It has also arranged for students to gain extensive practical experience, with the first batch of graduates completing over 1,000 hours of clinical placements in hospitals, clinics and NGOs, preparing them for their future careers.

Henry Yuen Hin-lam (left):

“Since childhood, I have always had a deep passion for sports, and I appreciate the importance of physiotherapy in enhancing athletic performance and preventing injuries. After joining HKMU, I am happy to practise what I have learnt, such as providing sports rehabilitation services to parasailors under the guidance of my teachers.”

Summer Lau Tsz-sum (right):

“I suffered from scoliosis while pursuing secondary education and was fortunate to be treated with good care by my physiotherapist. During my studies here, I participated in various community services, such as giving health talks to NGOs and making home visits to promote public awareness of physiotherapy. These experiences enable me to better connect with patients in my future career.”
