Aims
The course aims to provide key principles, practices, and techniques of arts administration essential for effective art gallery and museum management, including curatorial planning and exhibition design, audience development and arts marketing and industry knowledge. To strengthen students' understanding and skills in curatorial and managerial practices, case studies of both traditional exhibitions and digital presentations will be reviewed and discussed. Contemporary issues and challenges of museum management will also be examined.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to art gallery and museum management
  • Roles and function of art galleries, museums and arts institutions
  • Key principles, practices, and techniques of arts management
  • Organization of arts projects, exhibitions and activities
  • Critical issues and challenges of art galleries and museums
  • Ecology of the art gallery and museum in Hong Kong and overseas
  • Management of venue facilities and infrastructure

Assessment
Assessment is based on students' performance in the continuous assessment components including a class presentation (worth 20% of the total mark for the course), a group project and presentation (worth 40% of the total mark for the course) and a final paper and oral presentation (worth 40% of the total mark for the course). Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
