Aims

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. evaluate the ways in which English texts are organised and English spoken and written discourse types vary in actual context of use;
  2. examine in what ways English literary productions and a range of literary genres can encourage creativity in learning and teaching of English; and
  3. apply the understanding of the English language system to English language learning and teaching.

Contents

ENGL 8815EEF is a comprehensive course consisting of two sections which introduce students to discourse analysis as well as literature and language arts in English.

Contact hours

78 face-to-face contact hours involving evening lectures and Sunday tutorials.

Learning support

This is a face-to-face course which includes 1) lectures and 2) tutorials. Lectures are used for explaining and analysing concepts and theories, as well as raising questions for further discussion in tutorials. In tutorials, small-group discussion is used to help students clarify the main concepts and illustrate these with further examples. Led by the tutors, students also discuss how their understanding of the English language system can be related to teaching.
