Advisory prerequisite(s)

You are advised to have already studied BUS 1000BED.

Aims

The course aims to equip students with the tools and techniques that facilitate good financial decisions in order to achieve organisational goals, and provide students with a solid knowledge of the avenues through which organisations raise financial capital and risk management.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Organisational goals and financial decision making
  • Organisations and the financial system
  • Time value of money and cost of capital
  • Investment appraisal
  • Asset valuation techniques
  • Derivatives and risk management

Learning support

There will be four two-hour online lectures, 16 one-hour online surgeries and two six-hour compulsory in-person day schools.

The dates for the compulsory in-person day schools are as follows:

Assessment

There are four online lecture polls, two application-based assessments, two assignments and one examination. Assignments should be prepared with a word processing software (such as Microsoft Word), and submitted to Turnitin for plagiarism checking via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment

Students will need access to a personal computer with an Internet connection.
