Aims
This course aims to provide learners with an introduction to databases and dimensional modelling. It explains in detail the architecture of a data warehouse and the tools and processes required to make it work. In addition, it provides learners with an appreciation of the key factors in managing a data warehouse project as well as an understanding of three applications of data warehouse technology, in the areas of customer relationship management, the World Wide Web and knowledge management. Finally, the course provides learners with experience in implementing a data warehouse in a popular relational database management system.

There will be ten two-hour classes (each including an one-hour supplementary lecture and an one-hour surgery) and ten two-hour tutorials.
Assessment
There are four tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) and one three-hour examination. Students must use word processing software (such as Microsoft Word) to prepare the TMAs, and submit the TMAs via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
Equipment
Students will need access to a Pentium-based PC with an Internet connection.
