Aims

The course aims to provide students with an introduction to the principles and purposes of accounting and its role in business management. It equips students with the basic knowledge, understanding, and skills of financial and management accounting.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to accounting
  • Essentials of double-entry bookkeeping
  • Accrual accounting concepts
  • Control over the ledgers
  • Preparing financial statements
  • Essentials of cost and management accounting
  • Management accounting applications
  • Company financial accounting in the context of markets, law and society
  • Understanding and preparing financial statements for single entity limited companies
  • Understanding cash flows and preparing cash flow statements
  • Legal issues and financial accounting
  • Financial accounting information and external stakeholders

Learning support

There will be eight two-hour live online lectures, 32 one-hour live online surgeries, and four six-hour compulsory face-to-face day schools.

Assessment

There are four assignments, four application-based assessments, lecture polls and one examination.  Assignments should be prepared with Microsoft Word, and submitted to Turnitin for plagiarism checking via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment

Students will need access to a personal computer with an Internet connection.
