Advisory prerequisite(s)
You are advised to have completed SCI S102, SCI S112 or SCI S122.

Aims
The overall aims of this course are to introduce students to the basic principles of molecular biology and microbiology for applied science and environmental science.

Contents
The course aims to cover the following topics:

  • Cellular structure and function
  • Microbial growth and the principle of microbial metabolism
  • Microbial genetics
  • Genetic engineering and molecular techniques
  • Food and environmental microbiology and pathogenic microbes

Learning support
Examples of learning support include face-to-face tutorials, surgeries, laboratory sessions, web materials, CD-ROMs, videos and/or field visits. Laboratory sessions or field visits may be held on weekday evenings, Saturdays or Sundays.

Assessment
In addition to two assignments, assessment includes a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment
Students need access to a personal computer or other electronic devices with an Internet connection.
