Aims

This course aims to help students explore what happens when they bring different knowledge, skills and learning experiences together. Students will discover the richness that comes from thinking about a topic from a variety of angles. This insight may help confirm that their learning goals are exactly as planned, or it may open a whole new world of possibilities.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Becoming an effective learner
  • Notetaking and good academic practice
  • The origin of disciplines
  • Developing digital learning skills
  • Understanding assessment and feedback

Learning support

There will be five two-hour online lectures, two two-hour online surgeries, 14 one-hour consultation sessions and one six-hour compulsory face-to-face day school. The date for the compulsory face-to-face day school is as follows:

Assessment

There is an application-based assessment to be completed during the compulsory face-to-face day school. There are also regular lecture polls and two assignments. Written assignments should be prepared with Microsoft Word and submitted to Turnitin for plagiarism checking via the Online Learning Environment (OLE). Students will also be required to create and submit a short video.

Equipment

Students will need access to a personal computer with Internet connection and a webcam for preparing the short video.
