Course Coordinator:

Dr Vincent Kwan Ho-yuet, BEng, MPhil (HKUST); PhD (CUHK)

ELEC 3250SED is a six-credit-unit, two-term, 3000-level course. It is intended for students who wish to study for a BSc degree in Electronics.

Advisory prerequisite(s)

Students are advised to have studied the foundation mathematics course MATH 1220SED or other equivalent level course before studying this course.

Aims

This course aims to:

  • provide students with a comprehensive introduction to electronic analogue circuits;
  • enable students to understand the principles of operation for analogue circuits;
  • prepare students to design and construct analogue circuits to meet performance specifications;
  • equip students with practical skills to diagnose and rectify faults in analogue circuits; and
  • help students evaluate circuit behaviour and establish applications of analogue circuits across different designs.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to acquire the following skills and abilities:

  • Explain the principle of operations for basic electronic analogue circuits.
  • Analyse circuit behaviour under different operating frequencies.
  • Design and construct analogue circuits to meet performance specifications.
  • Diagnose and resolve practical problems in analogue circuits.
  • Apply computer-aided design tools to simulate analogue circuits, and assess their performance.

Contents

The course consists of the following study units:

Unit 1 Analogue principles

Unit 2 Transistors and basic circuits

Unit 3 Audio amplifier design

Unit 4 Power supplies

Unit 5 Higher-frequency circuits

Learning support

There will be a total of seven two-hour tutorials, three two-hour surgeries, two two-hour short laboratory sessions and two five-hour long laboratory sessions throughout the course.

Tutorial and surgery sessions are used to present and explain the basic concepts of electronics. The laboratory sessions offer opportunities for students to put into practice what they have learnt. Students are required to complete practical exercises in laboratory sessions and submit them for assessment purposes.

Assessment

Course assessment includes continuous assessment (50% weighting) and a closed-book final examination (50% weighting).

Continuous assessment includes three assignments (20%, 20% and 10% weighting respectively). The assignments are mainly problem-solving and include computer simulation. A formal report on particular laboratory work is assessed.

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Online requirement

This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). You can find the latest course information from the OLE. Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. To access the OLE, students will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.

Equipment

A computer system suitable for running the ELEC 3250SED software package is essential. The minimum configuration of the computer system is:

  • Pentium CPU
  • Colour monitor
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 20 GB free hard disk space
  • Mouse

Software

You should have at least Microsoft Windows 10.

Set book(s)

There are no set books for this course.

Students with disabilities or special educational needs

The visual components of this course may cause difficulties for students with a visual impairment. You are encouraged to seek advice from the Course Coordinator before enrolling in the course.
