Aims

ENGL 1070EED English for Post-secondary Study aims to:

  • improve students' abilities to read challenging academic texts and build their academic vocabulary;
  • develop students' abilities to structure their writing effectively to communicate their ideas more clearly; and
  • develop students' abilities to write academic essays in English which comply with international tertiary-level education standards in terms of structure, expression and linguistic and orthographic accuracy.

Learning support

This course involves 120 study hours. There will be seven two-hour tutorials to discuss students' progress and provide them with further practice in the skills taught in the materials.

Assessment

Continuous assessment

This course has two assignments, and each is described here very briefly.

For Assignment 1, students are required to complete (1) three grammar and usage tasks and (2) a reading comprehension task.

For Assignment 2, students are required to complete (1) three grammar and usage tasks and (2) an academic writing task.

Each assignment carries 20% of the weighting for the course.

Examination

The examination for ENGL 1070EED will be of three hours' duration and will account for 60% of the total course grade. The examination will reflect very closely the work students carry out during the course, thus ensuring that only what actually taught is finally examined. The examination will require students to complete three grammar and usage tasks, a reading comprehension task and an academic essay writing task. No course-related reading matter and other materials will be allowed in the examination room.
