Aims

This course aims to improve students' abilities to read, interpret and select materials from different sources and further incorporate selected material into an academic essay that avoids plagiarism.

Contents

The course covers primarily the following topics:

  • Planning for writing
  • Developing reading skills
  • Integrating sources of information: How to summarise and paraphrase
  • Referencing and avoiding plagiarism
  • Obtaining information from primary sources
  • Organising academic writing
  • Evaluating and revising writing
  • Communicating in academic writing

Learning support

There will be four two-hour tutorials and one supplementary lecture.

Assessment

There are two assignments and a final examination.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
