Aims

The course aims to:

  • equip students with the grammatical and vocabulary knowledge required for effective communication; and
  • enhance students' English proficiency in reading and writing for academic, social and work purposes.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Linguistic foundations of reading and writing
  • Essential strategies for effective reading and writing
  • Reading and writing effectively in social and persuasive contexts
  • Reading and writing skills for academic study
  • Written communication skills in the workplace

Learning support

Seven two-hour tutorials will be conducted at regular intervals throughout the course to support learning. Useful online resources which help students consolidate their learning will also be provided.

Assessment

Students are required to complete three written assignments for continuous assessment purposes in this course (40%). A final examination which lasts two and a half hours will also be conducted at the end of the course (60%).

Electronic submission of assignments

Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
