Aims

ENGL 1202EED University English: Listening and Speaking aims to:

  • enhance students' accuracy and fluency of spoken English in different settings;
  • improve students' English listening proficiency in various contexts;
  • develop students' listening and speaking skills for social, academic and work purposes;
  • enable students to communicate effectively using appropriate verbal and non-verbal skills; and
  • advance students' critical thinking skills and persuasion skills in English.

Contents

ENGL 1202EED University English: Listening and Speaking is a one-term, three-credit-unit English proficiency course composed of five modules. The first two modules focus on listening and speaking skills that would enable students to effectively communicate in English. The remaining three modules cover English use in daily, academic and workplace settings, where students are expected to build on what they have learnt in the previous modules and apply the skills to different contexts.

Learning support

This distance learning course will be delivered through 14 hours of face-to-face tutorials, with supplementary printed materials provided.

Assessment

Continuous assessment accounts for 40% of the overall course grade. The course has two assignments. Each assignment accounts for 20% of the overall course grade. In Assignment 1, learners are required to complete a listening comprehension task. In Assignment 2, learners are required to compose an oral report. The examination, which accounts for 60% of the overall course grade, will last for two hours. It will include listening comprehension tasks and oral components.

Electronic submission of assignments

Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
