Aims

This course aims to equip students with linguistic knowledge and tools to explore and analyse English as it is currently used. It introduces students to linguistics as a field of study and covers the following branches: phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax. Students who are intent on taking this course should note that this is not an English enhancement course; they are expected to have an adequate command of English.

Contents

The course covers primarily the following topics:

  • Introduction to English linguistics
  • Phonetics
  • Phonology
  • Morphology
  • Syntax

Learning support

Regular two-hour tutorials and a supplementary lecture will be arranged.

Assessment

There are three assignments and a final examination.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
