Aims

This course aims to:

  • consolidate students' understanding of important literary texts from different historical periods and cultures;
  • develop their abilities in presenting their ideas effectively in a logical and argumentative manner; and
  • enhance their analytical skills in appreciating and interpreting literary texts within and beyond their socio-cultural contexts.

Contents

The course comprises four study units. The first unit provides students with the fundamental knowledge about literary analysis and the literary canon, which serves as the foundation for the discussion of more specific and advanced topics in later units. Unit 2 Romanticism and Unit 3 Theatre of the absurd focus on specific literary styles that have had an enduring impact on the history of Western literature. Unit 4 The literary canon as contested paradigm offers an introspection into the idea of the literary canon, which has been rendered problematic by the multifarious theoretical perspectives that criticise its seemingly universal and unbiased nature.
