Aims

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. describe English sounds and how they combine as a sound system in the English language;
  2. analyse the ways in which English words are formed and structured as a meaningful system;
  3. identify the meanings of English words, phrases and sentences and the various semantic relations among words in the English language;
  4. account for English grammatical structures and analyse the relations between form, meaning and use in English grammar; and
  5. apply the understanding of the English language system to English language learning and teaching.

Contents

ENGL 8810EEF is a comprehensive course consisting of three sections which introduce students to major areas in i) phonetics and phonology, ii) lexis, morphology and semantics and iii) pedagogical grammar and the ways in which such knowledge can be applied to English language teaching.

Contact hours

84 face-to-face contact hours, including 66 hours of lectures and 18 hours of tutorials.

Learning support

This is a face-to-face course which includes 1) lectures and 2) tutorials. Lectures are used for explaining and analysing concepts and theories, as well as raising questions for further discussion in tutorials. In tutorials, small-group discussion is used to help students clarify the main concepts and illustrate these with further examples. Led by the tutors, students also discuss how their understanding of the English language system can be related to teaching. Tutorials are also used to help students plan and work on their assignments.
