This course is designed for students who wish to practise writing academic essays. Students who require a course dealing with language improvement should take ENGL A090 or ENGL E100.

Aims
This course aims to improve students' abilities to read, interpret and select material from print and electronic sources and incorporate this material into an academic essay that avoids plagiarism.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Planning for writing
  • Summarizing and paraphrasing
  • Using information from print and non-print sources
  • Avoiding plagiarism
  • Organizing and evaluating academic writing
  • Referencing

Learning support
There will be eight two-hour tutorials and one supplementary lecture.

Assessment
There are three assignments and a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
