This is a higher-level course designed for students with a solid foundation in English literature. This course consists of a study of four major authors: William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, Jane Austen and Margaret Atwood. Students will study a wide range of texts spanning some 400 years in different literary genres including drama, poetry and the novel.

Aims
This course aims to introduce students to selected masterpieces by major authors in English literature through the exploration of literary features, themes, concepts, as well as relevant historical and cultural elements.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • What is a major author?
  • William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night and Macbeth
  • William Wordsworth, Lyrical Ballads and The Prelude
  • Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice and Emma
  • Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale and Alias Grace
  • English literature today

Learning support
There will be regular two-hour tutorials.

Assessment
There are four assignments and a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Set book(s)
A custom textbook will be provided. In addition, students are required to obtain and study all of the set texts by the major authors discussed in the course. The full list of texts will be provided to students in the course materials.
