Credits gained from completing this course may be counted towards the 'free choice credit' component of most degree programmes. Successful students will receive certificates in addition to their credits. Alternatively, students may choose only to sit the end-of-course examination, which is on a non-credit basis. Successful examination candidates will be awarded certificates.

Aims
This course aims to:

  • Develop learners' basic skills and knowledge in English listening and speaking;
  • Enhance learners' English proficiency in listening and speaking in academic, social and workplace contexts.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Linguistic foundations of listening and speaking
  • Essential strategies for effective listening and speaking
  • Listening and speaking skills in social and persuasive contexts
  • Listening and speaking skills in academic settings
  • Spoken communication skills in the workplace

Learning support
This course involves 150 study hours. There will be eight two-hour tutorials.

Assessment
There will be three assignments and a final examination that will cover the two language skills, listening and speaking. Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment
Students will need a computer that can access the Internet and play both MP3 and MP4 files.
