COMP 2010SED Computing Fundamentals with Java is a two-term, six-credit-unit, 2000-level course within the Bachelor of Computing with Honours in Internet Technology (BCITH) programme suite and the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Computing and Networking (BSCICNH) programme suite. It is a compulsory course for BCITH and BSCICNH. This course is designed to provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of computing and is suitable for students who do not have prior experience in programming. The problem solving aspect of computing will be emphasised. The main focus is to learn an object-oriented programming language (Java) and use it to solve problems. The software development cycle will also be introduced.

Aims

This course aims to:

  • outline the ethics and regulatory frameworks for the gems and jewellery industry;
  • develop systems for effective management of inventory, cost control and human resources to optimise production and management in gems and jewellery enterprises;
  • apply design principles and production techniques to oversee the manufacturing of gems and jewellery;
  • evaluate quality control methods, risk management protocols, and quality management systems to ensure consistent product quality and customer satisfaction; and
  • integrate the use of digital management systems to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of gems and jewellery production.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Industry regulatory management and ethics
  • Principles and strategies of jewellery management
  • Manufacturing and production management
  • Quality assurance and quality control
  • Application of digital management systems

Learning support

This course includes 33 hours of lectures. In the lectures, the lecturer will carry out a mix of teaching and learning activities, including explanations, discussions and demonstrations. Students can take the opportunity to interact and ask questions. The course will also provide Online Learning Environment (OLE) and telephone consultations.

Assessment

The course assessment includes two assignments (50%) and a project-based assessment (50%). Students are required to submit assignments via the OLE.

Electronic submission of assignments

Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Online requirement

This course uses the OLE. There students will find course materials and the latest course information. Students can also make use of the platform to communicate with their tutor, Course Coordinator and fellow students. Students are recommended to visit the OLE regularly.

Equipment 

Students will need a computer to do some exercises and access the Internet and the OLE of the course. We recommend the following computing requirements:

  • a PC or equivalent
  • an email account
  • an Internet connection.

Equipment

A PC-compatible computer ready for connecting to the Internet is essential. The minimum configuration of the computer is:

  • PC with an x86 CPU or equivalent
  • 1GB RAM
  • Hard disk
  • Sound card with speakers

You need to be familiar with the basic use of a computer including keyboard, mouse and word processing software. Experience in using email, the Internet and the World Wide Web is also essential.

  • Windows 10 or equivalent
  • A Web browser: Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari or equivalent
