Aims

This course aims to provide students with sound knowledge and skills in using computers and the Internet for university learning and daily life, such as common hardware components, software applications, multimedia concepts and data communication.

Contents

This course covers the following topics:

  • Word processing for academic writing
  • Spreadsheets and databases
  • Academic presentation
  • Learning in the Information Age

Learning support

There will be seven tutorials, each lasting for two hours.

Assessment

There will be three assignments.

Electronic submission of assignments

Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Online Requirement

Students will need computers with the following equipment and software, as well as access to a broadband Internet service.

Equipment and Software

Equipment:

  • Pentium V or higher processor and a minimum of 512 MB RAM
  • Hard disk of 2.5 GB or higher capacity
  • Colour monitor with a VGA display card
  • Keyboard and mouse
  • Sound card with speakers or headphones, and microphone
  • Printer for printing graphics

Software:

  • Microsoft Office 2021 or above
