IT 2340SED Web Site Design is a two-term, six-credit-unit, 2000-level course that may be taken as part of the following programmes: BCOMPU, ASCIIT, BCITH. The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of web project management, including creating creative design, coding, maintenance and website promotion.

Aims

This course aims to:

  • lead students through the entire website creation process from start to finish;
  • examine current web design principles and theories;
  • demonstrate the tools, technologies and methods used to design, produce, launch, promote and manage websites;
  • develop and enhance students' HTML, CSS, and visual design skills; and
  • discuss how web designers tackle major issues and challenges, including usability, accessibility, privacy and copyright ownership.

Contents

The course consists of the following study units:

  • Creating web pages with HTML
  • Web design basics
  • Cascading Style Sheets and graphics design fundamentals
  • Page layouts
  • Information and navigation design
  • Data tables, forms, multimedia, and interactivity
  • Site launch, promotion and maintenance
  • Accessibility, copyright and privacy

Learning support

Various kinds of support are available to students during the course. They include tutorials, surgeries and online support.

Assessment

There are three assignments and a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Online requirement

The use of the Online Learning Environment (OLE) is mandatory for the submission of assignments as well as access to the discussion board. Optional online support sessions will also be presented.

Equipment

Students will need access to a computer suitable for connecting to the Internet. The recommended minimum computing requirements are:

  • Intel® Core™ i3-8350K Processor
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 1920 x 1080 screen resolution
  • True color (32-bit) or deep color (40-bit or higher) display
  • USB port
  • 8 GB hard disk space
  • Sound card and speakers

Software

Students will need access to a computer with Microsoft Windows 10 or above, as well as the following packages.

Web browser: Google Chrome, Edge or Mozilla Firefox

Text editor: A text editor that supports universal character encoding such as Notepad2, Notepad++ and Visual Studio Code

Graphics editor: A graphics editor that supports saving files in JPEG, PNG and GIF (e.g. GIMP, Irfanview, and Paint.NET, Canva, Adobe Photoshop Express, Adobe Express)

Utilities: FTP client (for uploading files to a web server)

Students with disabilities or special educational needs

The course involves a lot of keyboard and mouse work and therefore anyone with restricted manual movement should contact the Course Coordinator to discuss possible strategies. In addition, anyone with impaired vision should contact the Course Coordinator especially with regards to problems differentiating between colours.
