Aims
This course aims to introduce knowledge and knowing as tools for making sense of the various challenges that confront managers. The course will help learners to develop a knowledge-based perspective on the challenge of managing intangible assets, and evaluate the planning and implementation of strategies for managing knowledge in practice.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • An introduction to knowledge management
  • Managing local practices in global contexts
  • Communication and sensemaking
  • Managing intangible assets
  • The human resource dimensions of managing knowledge
  • Managing knowledge in an organizational context
  • Managing knowledge in practice
  • Managing knowledge: A synthesis

Contact hours
A total of 48 contact hours across one term, including 11 three-hour lectures and five three-hour tutorial classes. Students are also required to complete six additional self-study hours to prepare for the in-class assessment.

Assessment
Course assessment is based on two assignments, one quiz, one in-class assessment and class participation. The assignments account for 40% of the total course score, the quiz accounts for 20%, the in-class assessment accounts for 10%, class participation accounts for 10%, and the compulsory oral presentation accounts for 20%. The assignments are individual/group assignments. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Students will need access to a personal computer with an Internet connection.
