Aims

This course aims to:

  1. develop students' understanding of the importance and principles of symptom management in the context of extensive end-of-life care for different age groups; and
  2. equip students with the knowledge necessary for symptom management in end-of-life care for patients of different age groups.

Contents

  1. Prevalence of symptoms of advanced diseases for different age groups
  2. Importance and principles of integrative symptom management in extensive end-of-life care for different age groups
  3. Causes, pathophysiology, assessments and interventions of common symptoms: pain, cough and dyspnea, nausea and vomitting, constipation and diarrhoea, anorexia and dehydration, pruritus, insomnia, anxiety and depression
  4. Traditional Chinese medicine and other complementary and alternative therapies, such as aromatherapy, music and art therapy
  5. Interdisciplinary team approach in integrative symptom management for different age groups
  6. Client-centred plan of care: prioritization and goals of care
  7. Special considerations in community settings and paediatric patients
