This is one of the core courses for the Bachelor of Nursing programme. This course may also be suitable for students who are interested in assessing clients' health states, and the conceptual and operational dimensions of primary health care.

Aims
This course aims to:

  • Strengthen nurses' knowledge and skills in all aspects of health assessment;
  • Enhance nurses' understanding of the philosophy, concepts and implementation of primary health care.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to health assessment
  • Developmental, spiritual and nutritional assessment
  • Psychosocial and cultural assessment
  • Physical assessment
  • Health assessment across the lifespan and complete health assessment
  • Fundamentals concepts and philosophies of primary health care
  • Primary health care in community settings
  • Global impact and effective governance of primary health care
  • Nurses’ roles and the development of primary health care in Hong Kong
  • Primary health care in action

Learning support
There will be 11 monthly two-hour tutorials throughout the course.

Assessment
There will be three written assignments (two for continuous assessment and one for final examination). All assignments are to be submitted online.
