Aims

The course aims to provide an overview of scientific disciplines and leadership practices that are crucial for sporting success. It focuses on key drivers for sports performances including informed coaching, scientific supports and effective leadership. It equips students with the key concepts and terminologies that are needed for effective communications in sports. Through practical sessions and case studies, students will be confronted with challenges and complications in applying scientific findings and leadership models, and thus enabling them to acquire effective problem solving and management skills in sports.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Exploring science and coaching
  • Understanding the body in action
  • Monitoring people and performance in sport and fitness
  • Leadership in sport and fitness
  • Motivation in sport and fitness settings
  • Exploring the development of physical skills for sport and fitness

Learning support

There will be eight two-hour online lectures, thirty-two one-hour online surgery and four six-hour compulsory face-to-face day schools.

Assessment

There are two assignments, four application-based assessments conducted during compulsory face-to-face day schools, eight lecture polls conducted during supplementary lectures and one examination. Assignments should be prepared with Microsoft Word and submitted to Turnitin for plagiarism checking via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment

Students will need access to a personal computer with an Internet connection.

Online study materials will be provided.

Remarks

This is a two-term course starting in the Spring Term with teaching activities in the Summer Term. The course will end in the Summer Term.
