Aims

The course aims to develop students' understanding of the psychological factors that influence athletic development. Students will be equipped with a knowledge and understanding of the environmental and personal psychological characteristics that influence development paths, such as family, coaches, career transition, leadership and theoretical influences. Through practical sessions and case studies, students will understand different research approaches and instruments used in applied psychology specific to athletic development, and gain the ability to reflect on and apply psychological evidence to coaching behaviour.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Researching athletic development
  • Family influences on athletic development
  • The coach–athlete relationship
  • Competing in the dark: mental health in sport
  • Topical issues in athletic development
  • The athlete's journey through sport

Learning support

There will be eight two-hour online lectures, 32 one-hour online surgeries and four six-hour compulsory in-person day schools.

Assessment

There are three assignments, four application-based assessments and one examination. Assignments should be prepared with Microsoft Word, and submitted to Turnitin for plagiarism checking via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Students will need access to a personal computer with an Internet connection.
