This course is one of the core courses of the BSc and BSc (Hons) in Product Design, Testing and Certification programme. This course is recommended to students who want to learn about product certification, practices for laboratory accreditation and the ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory management system.

Advisory prerequisite(s)

Students are advised to have already studied SCI S319 or TC S319.

Aims

The overall aims of this course are to introduce students to the principles of product certification and to facilitate students' understanding of the ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory management system and its technical requirements.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to product certification
  • Product certification schemes
  • Overview of laboratory accreditation
  • ISO/IEC 17025: Management requirements
  • ISO/IEC 17025: Technical requirements and applications

Learning support

There will be five tutorials, one surgery and two laboratory sessions during the course.

Assessment

There will be two assignments and a written final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. To access the OLE, you will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.
