This course is a compulsory course for students in the BSc (Hons) in Product Design, Testing and Certification programme. It aims to provide an opportunity for students to integrate and consolidate previous knowledge gained to solving real-life problems in the areas of product design, testing and certification. Students are required to take TC S450 as the final course in the Honours degree programme.

You will work under the supervision of a supervisor (tutor) who will guide you throughout your project work. TC S450 provides you with an opportunity to carry out a supervised project in any area or combination of areas covered by the courses of the BSc (Hons) in Product Design, Testing and Certification programme.

Students taking the project course may carry out the practical work in our Testing and Certification laboratories, at their workplace, or at home. The tutorial sessions, where students meet with their project supervisors (tutors), will be held regularly. In addition to this, students can also communicate with the supervisors at other times through the OLE, email and by phone.

Compulsory prerequisite(s)
Students should have completed 140 credits from the OUHK BSc (Hons) in Product Design, Testing and Certification programme.

Aims
This course aims to:

  • Provide students with an opportunity to integrate the knowledge gained from courses studied and to work independently on a scientific project;
  • Train students in objective-setting for a research project;
  • Familiarize students with appropriate scientific methodology and work plans;
  • Teach students to organize themselves and their work to achieve a specified goal within a limited amount of time;
  • Provide students with hands-on practice in gathering, analysing and evaluating material relevant to their project, in order to increase their understanding and awareness, along with the generation of ideas;
  • Train students to produce a written report that clearly and concisely communicates the content of the project to others.

Contents
The course has no conventional course materials. However, students may be required to read scientific materials available in journals and reference books, as recommended by the tutor. This course will enable students to reveal problems yet to be tackled in these areas, and to understand the directions scholars are taking to find solutions.

Students will have to collect, analyse and evaluate appropriate and relevant data related to their project, and generate new ideas on how to solve the problem concerned.

Learning support
There will be regular tutorials appropriately spaced to maximize tutor–student interaction.

Assessment
There will be an initial report, interim report, oral presentation, and a final written report. There may also be an oral examination if necessary. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. To access the OLE, you will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.
