Regulations for the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) or Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary)

1. General
1.1 These regulations are made under paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Regulations for Dual Awards.
1.2 In these regulations definitions shall apply as in the Regulations for Dual Awards and in the Interpretation Section of the Academic Rules and Regulations.
2. Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) (BLSHPGDEP)
Pathway 1
2.1 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) programme — Pathway 1, a student shall normally have:
  2.1.1 a Grade E/Level 2 or above in English Language [or Grade C or above in English Language Syllabus A] and Chinese Language in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination/the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, or equivalent; and
  2.1.2 satisfactory performance in School selection interviews.
2.2 To be eligible for the awards of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) — Pathway 1, a student shall:
  2.2.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  2.2.2 comply with the Regulations for Dual Awards; and
  2.2.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  2.2.4 obtain at least 190 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and of which 30 credits are at Postgraduate level, as prescribed by the regulations.
2.3 For the awards of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) — Pathway 1, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  2.3.1 successfully complete 160 credits from the compulsory courses labelled C1 in Table 1; and
  2.3.2 successfully complete 10 credits from courses labelled E1 in Table 1; and
  2.3.3 successfully complete 10 credits from an elective course in professional studies labelled E in Table 1; and
  2.3.4 successfully complete 10 additional credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University.
 
Pathway 2
2.4 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) programme — Pathway 2, a student shall normally have:
  2.4.1 a recognized associate degree, or equivalent in English studies or a related area; and
  2.4.2 satisfactory performance in School selection interviews.
2.5 To be eligible for the awards of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) — Pathway 2, a student shall:
  2.5.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  2.5.2 comply with the Regulations for Dual Awards; and
  2.5.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  2.5.4 obtain at least 125 credits of courses as prescribed by the regulations.
2.6 For the awards of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) — Pathway 2, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  2.6.1 successfully complete 85 credits from the compulsory courses labelled C2 in Table 1; and
  2.6.2 successfully complete 10 credits from courses labelled E2a in Table 1; and
  2.6.3 successfully complete 20 credits from the English language studies elective courses labelled E2b in Table 1; and
  2.6.4 successfully complete 10 credits from an elective course in professional studies labelled E in Table 1.
Pathway 3
2.7 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) programme — Pathway 3, a student shall normally have:
  2.7.1 a recognized associate degree, or equivalent in an area not related to English studies; and
  2.7.2 satisfactory performance in School selection interviews.
2.8 To be eligible for the awards of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) — Pathway 3, a student shall:
  2.8.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  2.8.2 comply with the Regulations for Dual Awards; and
  2.8.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  2.8.4 obtain at least 155 credits of courses as prescribed by the regulations.
2.9 For the awards of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) — Pathway 3, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  2.9.1 successfully complete 135 credits from the compulsory courses labelled C3 in Table 1; and
  2.9.2 successfully complete 10 credits from courses labelled E3 in Table 1; and
  2.9.3 successfully complete 10 credits from an elective course of professional studies labelled E in Table 1.
3. Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) (BLSHPGDES)
Pathway 1
3.1 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) programme — Pathway 1, a student shall normally have:
  3.1.1 a Grade E/Level 2 or above in English Language [or Grade C or above in English Language Syllabus A] and Chinese Language in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination//the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, or equivalent; and
  3.1.2 satisfactory performance in School selection interviews.
3.2 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) — Pathway 1, a student shall:
  3.2.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  3.2.2 comply with the Regulations for Dual Awards; and
  3.2.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  3.2.4 obtain at least 190 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and of which 30 credits are at Postgraduate level, as prescribed by the regulations.
3.3 For the awards of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) — Pathway 1, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  3.3.1 successfully complete 160 credits from the compulsory courses labelled C4 listed in Table 1; and
  3.3.2 successfully complete 10 credits from courses labelled E4 listed in Table 1; and
  3.3.3 successfully complete 20 additional credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, of which no more than 10 credits are at Foundation level.
Pathway 2
3.4 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) programme — Pathway 2, a student shall normally have:
  3.4.1 a recognized associate degree, or equivalent in English studies or a related area; and
  3.4.2 satisfactory performance in School selection interviews.
3.5 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) — Pathway 2, a student shall:
  3.5.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  3.5.2 comply with the Regulations for Dual Awards; and
  3.5.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  3.5.4 obtain at least 125 credits of courses as prescribed by the regulations.
3.6 For the awards of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) — Pathway 2, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  3.6.1 successfully complete 85 credits from the compulsory courses labelled C5 in Table 1; and
  3.6.2 successfully complete 10 credits from courses labelled E5a in Table 1; and
  3.6.3 successfully complete 30 credits from the English language studies elective courses labelled E5b in Table 1.
Pathway 3
3.7 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) programme — Pathway 3, a student shall normally have:
  3.7.1 a recognized associate degree, or equivalent in an area not related to English studies; and
  3.7.2 satisfactory performance in School selection interviews.
3.8 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) — Pathway 3, a student shall:
  3.8.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  3.8.2 comply with the Regulations for Dual Awards; and
  3.8.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  3.8.4 obtain at least 155 credits of courses as prescribed by the regulations.
3.9 For the awards of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) — Pathway 3, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  3.9.1 successfully complete 135 credits from the compulsory courses labelled C6 in Table 1; and
  3.9.2 successfully complete 10 credits from courses labelled E6 in Table 1; and
  3.9.3 successfully complete 10 additional credits from any Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University.
4. Each degree with Honours shall be conferred with a classification of First Class, Second Class (Upper Division), Second Class (Lower Division) or Third Class save that exceptionally a degree may be conferred without classification.
5. Subject to the requirements of the relevant programme of study, each person on whom an Honours degree is to be conferred shall be assigned to a classification determined by the University according to its regulations.
6. For the calculation of scores for classification purposes in the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours, the University has deemed that “Group (a)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in English language studies courses at Higher level listed in Table 1, and that “Group (b)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in courses at Higher or Middle level listed in Table 1, where such credits are not taken into account in “Group (a)”. Further, that “X” shall equal two, that is “Group (a)” shall be weighted at twice the value of “Group (b)”. (Refer to the paragraphs on Classification of the Dual Award of the Regulations for Dual Awards.)
7. Students of the programme must be conferred with both the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary), or both the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) at the same time. Any students who have successfully applied to be conferred with only the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours shall not be allowed to continue with the programme or to enter (or re-enter) the programme. No students of the programme may apply to be conferred with the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) or Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) only.

Notes:

  1. ENGL E100 has been replaced by ENGL E110 and ENGL E120. If students have successfully completed ENGL E100, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements of ENGL E110 and ENGL E120.
     
  2. Courses form excluded combinations with other courses. Only one of the courses of the excluded combinations can count towards an OUHK award. Students should refer to the list of excluded combinations for details.
     
  3. These courses include teaching practicums as an integral part of the assessment. Students will be required to undertake their teaching practice in secondary or primary schools for six weeks as full-time student-teachers on each course (i.e. a total of 12 weeks for the programme).
