Regulations for the Master of Social Sciences/Master of Social Sciences with specialization in Applied Economics and Policy Analysis/Applied Psychology/Criminology and Social Policy Studies/Global Governance

 

1. General
1.1
These regulations are made under paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees.
1.2
In these regulations, definitions shall apply as in the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees and Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates and in the Interpretation Section of the Academic Rules and Regulations.
1.3 A student shall complete the Master of Social Sciences or Master of Social Sciences with specialization in Applied Economics and Policy Analysis/Applied Psychology/Criminology and Social Policy Studies/Global Governance within one year for full-time study or two years for part-time study. Under special circumstances, students may apply to the Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences for extension of the maximum period of study, i.e. extension up to one year for full-time study or two years for part-time study.

Entry Requirements
2.1
To enter the Master of Social Sciences or Master of Social Sciences with specialization in Applied Economics and Policy Analysis/Applied Psychology/Criminology and Social Policy Studies/Global Governance, a student shall have obtained a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized tertiary education institution, or the equivalent.
3.
Master of Social Sciences (MSSCF)
3.1
To be eligible for the award of Master of Social Sciences, a student shall:
 
3.1.1
comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
 
3.1.2
comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
 
3.1.3
obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
3.2
For the Master of Social Sciences, the University has prescribed that a student must:
 
3.2.1
successfully complete 20 credits from core courses labelled CA in Table 1; and
 
3.2.2
successfully complete 40 credits from elective courses labelled OA in Table 1.
4.
Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Applied Economics and Policy Analysis) (MSSCAEPAF)
4.1
To be eligible for the award of Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Applied Economics and Policy Analysis), a student shall:
 
4.1.1
comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
 
4.1.2
comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
 
4.1.3
obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
4.2
For the Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Applied Economics and Policy Analysis), the University has prescribed that a student must:
 
4.2.1
successfully complete 20 credits from core courses labelled CA in Table 1; and
  4.2.2 successfully complete 30 credits from compulsory courses labelled AE in Table 1; and
  4.2.3 successfully complete 10 credits from elective courses labelled OB in Table 1.
5.
Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Applied Psychology) (MSSCAPF)
5.1
To be eligible for the award of Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Applied Psychology), a student shall:
 
5.1.1
comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
 
5.1.2
comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
 
5.1.3
obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
5.2
For the Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Applied Psychology), the University has prescribed that a student must:
 
5.2.1
successfully complete 20 credits from core courses labelled CA in Table 1; and
  5.2.2 successfully complete 30 credits from compulsory courses labelled AP in Table 1; and
  5.2.3 successfully complete 10 credits from elective courses labelled OB in Table 1.
6.
Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Criminology and Social Policy Studies) (MSSCCMSPSF)
6.1
To be eligible for the award of Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Criminology and Social Policy Studies), a student shall:
 
6.1.1
comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
 
6.1.2
comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
 
6.1.3
obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
6.2
For the Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Criminology and Social Policy Studies), the University has prescribed that a student must:
 
6.2.1
successfully complete 20 credits from core courses labelled CA in Table 1; and
  6.2.2 successfully complete 30 credits from compulsory courses labelled CS in Table 1; and
 
6.2.3
successfully complete 10 credits from elective courses labelled OB in Table 1.
7.
Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Global Governance) (MSSCGGF)
7.1
To be eligible for the award of Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Global Governance), a student shall:
 
7.1.1
comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
 
7.1.2
comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
 
7.1.3
obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
7.2
For the Master of Social Sciences (with specialization in Global Governance), the University has prescribed that a student must:
 
7.2.1
successfully complete 20 credits from core courses labelled CA in Table 1; and
 
7.2.2
successfully complete 30 credits from compulsory courses labelled GG in Table 1; and
  7.2.3 successfully complete 10 credits from elective courses labelled OB in Table 1.
