Launch of HKMU
At the start of an eventful year, the former Open University of Hong Kong was officially renamed as Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), kicking off a new era of exciting growth and innovation. A new School of Open Learning was established on the same day, reflecting the University's ongoing commitment to its time-honoured role of providing open education. In recognition of its expanding commitment to community, HKMU also launched a new series of its television programme Knowledge for All, hosted on TVB Pearl, and a new public lecture series for all called Talk of the Metropolis.
First Learning and Teaching Week
HKMU launched its academic year with a new Learning and Teaching Week for staff and students before the first semester got formally underway. Teaching staff enjoyed a week of seminars from local and overseas speakers on all aspects of their pedagogical work, while game booths and orientation sessions introduced students to learning support available at HKMU.
Talk of the Metropolis: The Hon. Mrs Carrie Lam
The first of HKMU's public Talk of the Metropolis lectures saw Hong Kong's top government figure, then Chief Executive Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, talk about the city's long-term development and give her insights into the opportunities available in Hong Kong.

MOU with Hong Kong Sports Institute to foster dual career pathways for elite athletes
HKMU signed an MOU with the Hong Kong Sports Institute in a move aimed at opening up new career pathways for its elite student athletes. The arrangement will provide greater support and training to individuals looking to study while also performing to their peak in their chosen sports.
Talk of the Metropolis: The Hon. Paul Chan
The second of HKMU's Talk of the Metropolis series featured Financial Secretary Mr Paul Chan Mo-po, who offered an in-depth analysis of Hong Kong's economic position while reflecting on what the future is likely to bring for the city and region.

Conferment of Honorary Fellowships
In a special ceremony, HKMU conferred Honorary Fellowships on three distinguished Hong Kong individuals: local grass-roots philanthropist Mr Chan Cheuk-ming, polymath singer, author and professor Dr Agnes Miling Chan, and influential hotel industry executive the late Mr Michael Li Hon-shing.
Agreement with Guangdong Neilingding Island Futian National Reserve and Shenzhen University on wetland research
HKMU signed an agreement with the Futian National Nature Reserve Management Bureau and Shenzhen University to establish a joint Greater Bay Area Mangrove Wetland Research and Development Centre. Sited in the Futian National Nature Reserve, the new centre offers HKMU a further opportunity to expand its research activities in this area.
Talk of the Metropolis: Mr Richard Lancaster
The third of the University's Talk of the Metropolis public lecture series featured CEO of CLP Holdings Mr Richard Lancaster, who discussed the hot topics of energy transition and climate change with a focus on CLP's part in achieving decarbonisation with the aid of technology.

Conferment of Honorary Doctorates
Three high-achieving academic figures were awarded Honorary Doctorates by HKMU at a ceremony held this month. They were Secretary of the Party Committee and President of The Open University of China Dr Jing Degang, HKMU Emeritus President and current Chairman of the Research Grants Council Prof. Yuk-Shan Wong, and Emeritus Professor and Senior Advisor of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Optometry Prof. George Woo.
30th Congregation
In its 30th annual Congregation, HKMU conferred some 7,000 academic qualifications to graduates of its Schools. The Congregation was held in 12 sessions across December.
Students' participation in Ink Global 2021
Ink Global 2021, an exhibition of ink paintings held first physically and then virtually in December 2021 and January 2022 at the Hong Kong Central Library, featured amazing work by 14 HKMU creative arts students utilising AR technology and digital paint brushes.
