Biography

Dr Penn Tsz Ting Ip is Assistant Professor at the School of Arts and Social Sciences (A&SS) at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU). Before joining HKMU, she worked as Assistant Professor at the Department of Cultural Industry Management, School of Media and Communication, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2019–2023). Trained as an urban cultural studies scholar, Dr Ip received her PhD and rMA in Cultural Analysis from the University of Amsterdam, earned her MA in Intercultural Studies from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and her BA in Humanities (minor in Communication Arts) with honors from Hong Kong Baptist University. Dr Ip's PhD project “Female Migrant Workers Navigating the Service Economy in Shanghai: Home, Beauty, and the Stigma of Singlehood” was supported by the Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) under the funded project “Creating the ‘New’ Asian Woman: Entanglements of Urban Space, Cultural Encounters and Gendered Identities in Shanghai and Delhi” (HERA-SINGLE). Since 2018, Dr Ip works as the Shanghai Research Team Lead of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)-funded partnership project “Urbanization, Gender and the Global South: A Transformative Knowledge Network” (GenUrb). Led by Professor Linda Peake, GenUrb is a transnational research project comprised of 40 scholars and the research takes place within and across six cities–Cochabamba, Delhi, Georgetown (Guyana), Ibadan, Ramallah, and Shanghai. Her research interests include youth culture, urban studies, migration studies, gender and women’s studies, cultural studies, and affect theory. Her research has been published in Emerging Media, the European Journal of Cultural StudiesInter-Asia Cultural Studies, the Journal of Gender Studies, the Journal of Popular Television, and the Journal of Urban Affairs.  Dr Ip is the first author of The Ordinary Women: Qualitative Research on Workers’ New Villages in Shanghai (2021, in Chinese, with Zhang Yu and Liu Xi). Collaborated with professors and students at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Dr Ip is the director of the feminist research platform "HEResearch: Global Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series."
