Programme description

This programme aims to broaden and deepen students’ understanding of economic science. Graduates will achieve the ability to think critically in business/economic policy analysis. The Honours programme will also enrich and strengthen students’ expertise and experience in economic research, enabling them to pursue graduate studies successfully. In addition to the economics courses, students are offered a wide range of theoretical and practical courses in finance, which allow them to achieve a sufficient level of competency to work in the financial sector. Upon graduation, students will have the ability to work at the managerial/ administrative level in business, banking and finance, education, government, as well as other non-profit making organizations.

Programme requirements

Students pursuing this programme must successfully complete at least 160 credits as follows. Of the 160 credits required for the attainment of the honours degree, students can complete up to 50 credits of courses in Chinese.

(e) an additional 20 credits of the courses at Foundation, Middle or Higher
level offered by the University, provided that, of the total 160 credits, no
more than 40 are gained at Foundation level.

Students are required to
complete 160 credits but they may opt to graduate with a lower qualification
such as Bachelor of Social Sciences in Economics [BSSCE] (120 credits) after
completing the required number of credits and fulfilling the requirements of the
programme regulations. Students may refer to the School's homepage

Choosing the first courses to get started

Students can choose one or more of the following courses to begin their study:

  • ECON A231 Introduction to Microeconomics

  • ECON A232 Introduction to Macroeconomics

If students have already taken introductory microeconomics and introductory macroeconomics at the tertiary level, they can consider the following courses to get begin their study:

  • ECON A311 Intermediate Microeconomics
  • ECON A312 Intermediate Macroeconomics

Students should consult the academic staff for course selection if they intend to apply for credit transfer from a recognized tertiary institution.
