Programme description
This programme provides comprehensive and in-depth training in the fields of law enforcement and security management. Most students at this level are members of the officer rank and above, though there are also rank and file members, and private security professionals at the middle management level and above. Members of the Hong Kong Police Force, the Correctional Services Department, and the Customs and Excise Departments of officer rank and above enjoy substantial credit exemption in the Honours Degree programme.

There are three pathways for students pursuing this programme.
BSSCHLESM1– Pathway 1
There are no programme-specific entry requirements.
Students pursuing this programme through Pathway 1 must successfully complete at least 160 credits as follows. Of the 160 credits required for the attainment of the degree, students can complete up to 50 credits of courses in Chinese.

BSSCHLESM2 — Pathway 2 (for students with the following background who have completed a Diploma in Law Enforcement and Security Mangement)
Junior Police Officers of the Hong Kong Police Force; Customs Officers and above and Assistant Trade Controls Officers and above of the Customs and Excise Department; and Assistant Officers II and above of the Correctional Services Department may pursue the programme through Pathway 2.
Programme-specific entry requirements: To enter the programme through this Pathway, you shall be: A Junior Police Officer, Customs Officer or above, Assistant Trade Controls Officer or above, or Assistant Officer II or above, who has successfully completed the Diploma in Law Enforcement and Security Management (60 credits at Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses1) plus two subsequent years of working experience in the Hong Kong Police Force, the Customs and Excise Department, or the Correctional Services Department as the case may be3 . |
Students pursuing this programme through Pathway 2 must successfully complete at least 80 credits as follows:

BSSCHLESM3 — Pathway 3
Police Inspectors and above of the Hong Kong Police Force, Inspectors and above of the Customs and Excise Department, and Officers and above of the Correctional Services Department may pursue the programme through Pathway 3.
Programme-specific entry requirements: To enter the programme through this Pathway, you shall be: (a) | a Police Inspector or above who has passed the Standard I and II Examinations administered by the Hong Kong Police Force plus two subsequent years of working experience at inspectorate grade#; or | (b) | an Inspector or above of the Customs and Excise Department who has EITHER passed the Promotion Qualifying Examination for Inspectors administered by the Customs and Excise Department, OR who has three years of working experience in the Customs and Excise Department at the inspectorate grade or above after confirmation as Inspector; or | (c) | an Officer or above of the Correctional Services Department who has passed the Promotion Qualifying Examination to Principal Officer AND completed the Junior Command Course, both administered by the Correctional Services Department, PLUS two years of working experience as Officer or above in the Correctional Services Department after the completion of the Junior Command Course. |

Students pursuing this programme through Pathway 3 must successfully complete at least 100 credits as follows. Of the 100 credits required for the attainment of the degree, students can complete up to 30 credits of courses in Chinese.

Choosing the first courses to get started
Depending on total credit exemption granted, students may or may not need to take foundation level courses. For those who need to do so, the course SOSC A121C Foundations of Social Sciences: Psychology (社會科學基礎課程:心理學) or SOSC A122C Foundations of Social Sciences: Sociology (社會科學基礎課程:社會學) is highly recommended. Students who feel that their English language skills need improvement could also consider taking the course ENGL A101 University English Writing Skills. Students who do not need to take foundation level courses are advised to begin with courses such as LESM A201 Hong Kong Criminal Justice System, LESM A202 Police and Society, LESM A203 Psychology for Law Enforcement, and LESM A204 Security Practice and Management.
Students should consult the academic staff for course selection if they intend to apply for credit transfer from a recognized tertiary institution.
