Seminar 5 for the series of “Chinese Mythology in the Digital Age”

The seminar delved into the enduring character of Wukong, the Monkey King, and his transformation in the digital era, particularly exemplified by the popular game Black Myth: Wukong. Dr. Liew Kai Khiun elucidated Wukong's journey from Chinese mythology and religious rituals to becoming a central figure in video games, thereby reflecting his cultural significance and adaptability across various media platforms.

The seminar focused on the evolution of Wukong's portrayal, tracing his depiction from early video games to modern, cinematic experiences enabled by advancements in gaming technology. It underscored the character's ability to traverse different media, invoking the concept of transmedia storytelling and its viral dissemination, as influenced by scholars such as Henry Jenkins.

A significant portion of the seminar examined the nexus between digital gaming and cultural tourism. It highlighted how video games can inspire fans to visit historical sites, akin to the influence of films and literature, thereby blurring the lines between virtual and physical experiences. This phenomenon, termed “game-inspired tourism” illustrates the power of narratives in driving cultural interest and travel.

The seminar also addressed the importance of narrative retellings in engaging diverse audiences. It emphasized how various interpretations of Wukong's story can convey different messages, resonating with distinct cultural contexts and accentuating the character's rebellious nature against authority.

In conclusion, the seminar reflected on the impact of the digital age on traditional narratives and cultural icons. It considered how digital technology facilitates new forms of storytelling and interaction with characters like Wukong, influencing real-world tourism and cultural appreciation. The discussion underscored the significance of understanding the dissemination of narratives in the digital age and the role of media in shaping cultural relevance, offering insights into the enduring legacy of Wukong and the potential of digital gaming to reshape cultural heritage.
