Biography
Andy Chin is the Dean and Professor of School of Education and Languages, Hong Kong Metropolitan University. Previously, Andy served as the Head of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies, Director of the Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Studies, Associate Dean (Research & Postgraduate Studies) at the Faculty of Humanities of The Education University of Hong Kong.
Andy received his undergraduate and MPhil training in linguistics from City University of Hong Kong. He then was awarded a 3-year full scholarships from the Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council to pursue his doctoral studies in Chinese linguistics at University of Washington in Seattle.
Andy has a wide range of research interests in linguistics, including linguistic typology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, and Chinese linguistics. He has undertaken different types of projects supported by competitive research grants, such as General Research Fund, Early Career Scheme, Knowledge Transfer Fund, Central Research Fund and Teaching Development Grants.
Andy has taught a great variety of linguistics courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels: Introduction to Linguistics, Language and Society / Sociolinguistics, Spoken and Written Discourse, Chinese Rhetoric, Structure of Chinese, Cantonese Linguistics, Language, Society and Cognition, Asian Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca in Asia. He also teaches Cantonese grammar courses for students in the area of Speech-Language Pathology.
The honors and awards Andy received include the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship for Overseas Studies (2000 - 2003), HKIEd President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Research (under the category of Early Career Research Excellence Award) (2013), Young Scholar Award for Best Paper conferred by the International Association of Chinese Linguistics.
